The death of 84 people on Saturday in a terror attack that targeted Shiites in Quetta raises questions about the government’s ability to guarantee security — especially that of its minorities — as Pakistan gears up for general elections in coming months.
Only a month ago more than hundred people lost their lives in a similar terrorist attack in Quetta.Minority Hazara community has become a prime target of recent terrorist attacks in the lawless province of Balochistan. Thousands of people have lost their lives and several thousands have migrated to other parts of the country in the face of increasing violence and terrorist attacks againstminority Hazara community. The central government last month dismissed the provincial government of Balochistan for failing to prevent terrorist attacks. The federal government claims that foreign elements are providing support and weapons to banned sectarian and terrorist groups. Despitegovernment’s claims, law-enforcement agencies have failed to arrest anyone responsible for the attacks. Innocent people are paying high price for the government’s failure. Due to increasing sectarian and tribal violence, Balochistan has become a no-go area for minority communities. Political parties have failed to bring about any change and things are going bad to worse everywhere. — Khawaja Umer FarooqJeddah
