Ebola outbreak kills hundreds in Congo

An ebola epidemic that has infected more than 1,000 people in central Africa is spreading at a record rate weeks after health officials reported the outbreak largely contained. Infections in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo reached 57 two weeks ago and 72 last week, contradicting the World Health Organisation, which said last month that the number of cases was falling. Militia violence and suspicion about responders wearing unfamiliar protection suits are posing the most serious challenges to the response, emergency teams have said. Five ebola treatment centres have been attacked in two months, scattering infected patients back into their communities.
