Mount Sinabung : Eruption is strongest in years

THE ERUPTION of the Indonesian volcano Mount Sinabung caused a horrifying flight warning to be issued after chaos ensued following a billowing cloud of ash covering parts of the island, it has emerged.

The country has raised flight warnings to the highest level around Mount Sinabung as the devastating ash covered the sky. Horrifying clouds reached as high as 4.4 miles (seven kilometres) in the air. Photos emerged of the chilling plumes that show the size and scale of the threat. Indonesia also issued a red warning to its Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation (Vona).

The city of Medan is home to Kualanamu international airport that is 75 kilometres from Mount Sinabung. Sinabung’s regular activity prompted a no-fly warning around areas of its crater years ago.
Volcanic ash contains tiny shards of glass, gases and crushed rocks that can severely damage a plane in mid-air. Volcanologist Janine Krippner emphasised the importance of the nine Volcanic Ash Advisory Centres posted across the globe that monitor escalating situations.
