The landslide victory of the Hindu right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) presents a huge challenge to the world’s largest democracy. After the miserable performance of the former Congress-led government people’s expectations are very high. India’s 60 percent population is dependent on agriculture and poverty is rising in the rural areas. The ill-conceived policies of the former government have pushed the prices of essential commodities up and have resulted in massive unemployment. Uplifting country’s economy and improving ties with neighboring countries particularly, China and Pakistan, and protecting rights of the minorities are major challenges facing this upcoming government. Modi’s checkered political history still haunts him and minorities are afraid that those things might be repeated.
