Tough challenges ahead for Nawaz Sharif

The honeymoon period of incoming Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his party Pakistan Muslim League (N) is almost over and tough challenges lie ahead. He has to grapple with a flailing economy, chronic power shortages and the country’s security crisis, as well as endemic corruption.
Sharif and his party got a thumping victory in the recently concluded elections as the Pakistani voters reposed faith in his leadership to steer the country out of the crises.

With expectations running high, Sharif and his party have to show progress soon after taking office. Sharif is not new to the challenges. He has been the country’s prime minister twice and therefore has enough experience to overcome these challenges. However, the power crisis and the worsening security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan will not be easy to deal with.

Recently, both Sharif and Imran Khan, whose party has formed the government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, have offered peace talks with the Taleban. But the killing of the Taleban’s second-in-command in a US drones attack has made matters worse for the newly elected government. After the recent attack, the militants have called off all negotiations with the incoming government.
