Despite terror threats and widespread violence, a large number of people cast their votes in the Pakistan election. The voting turnout of more than 60% was a record in the country’s history. The elections have proved that the majority of people in Pakistan reject the militants’ agenda and want peace and democracy in the country. Part of the credit for the smooth elections goes to the chief of army staff. Pakistan’s army had deployed more than 70,000 personnel in sensitive locations.
The high turnout also shows that people want a real change in the country. Several big names who formed part of the previous government lost their seats because of the country’s poor economic performance and power crisis. Nawaz Sharif is almost certain to be the next prime minister. But he should realise that public expectations remain high. A big test awaits the new government.
