Killing of 10 health workers, mostly women, puts Pakistani children at a high risk of being afflicted by polio, according to media reports. The killings have prompted the UN to stop the polio vaccination campaign in Pakistan. Due to a large campaign spreading across large parts of the country, the Pakistani government finds it hard to provide security to thousands of workers who are taking part in it.
Last year more than two hundred cases of polio were reported in different parts of country as militants organizations had banned vaccination campaign in their areas of influence. Militants have already banned health workers to enter South and North Waziristan for immunization campaign. According to health officials due to the ban imposed by militants, a record number of polio cases have been detected this year.
