In absence of strong laws and government’s deafening silence, corruption is becoming a part and parcel of daily lives of Pakistani people. Due to political influence, corruption, lack of merit and mismanagement, profitable institutions like Pakistan Railways, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), Pakistan Steel Mills, banking sector and several others are teetering on the brink of collapse. According to media reports, the Supreme Court was informed that the PIA had suffered a huge loss to the tune of 119 billion rupees last year alone. Only a month ago the national assembly was informed that Pakistan Railways suffered Rs 27 billion losses due to hike in diesel prices. Facing the worst financial crisis of its history, railways has closed several of its operations in different parts of country and now finds it hard to pay salaries to employees.
Despite receiving Rs 8.5 billion in bailout package from the federal government, Pakistan Steel Mills is also passing through the worst phase of its history. In national assembly, Minister of State for Production Chaudhry Anwar Ali Cheema of conceded that Pakistan Steel Mills is giving its worst performance for which he is ashamed.
The reason for bad state of affairs in major public sectors can be attributed to the fact all appointments in government institutions are politically motivated.
