The Myanmar government has reaffirmed a 2005 policy which punishes Rohingya women who bear more than two children with hefty fines and loss of legal rights for the children. This is the first time in the modern world a government is imposing population control policy on a minority population.
Only weeks ago, seven Muslims were jailed by a Myanmar court on various charges. But no majority community members have been punished over the recent communal riots and looting of Rohingya minorities.
Despite the atrocities against Rohingya Muslims, the world community remains silent. Thousands of Muslims are living in camps without any facilities. Many others are trying to escape to neighbouring countries through perilous sea journey. Two hundred people lost their lives last month when their boat sank while trying to migrate to Bangladesh.
